Normally on Fridays, I present a celebrity guest columnist. Someone who I think you all may find entertaining and enlightening. And whose gift of prose is much better than yours truly. But I've been a blog slacker lately, so I figured I'd work for once and present a little Friday post of my own.
For a month now their has been a horrendous oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico due to an oil platform in the Gulf exploding, killing 11 oil rig workers. The lame stream media has been reporting breathlessly and hoping, that this was to be the worst man made disaster in HISTORY!
Well an interesting thing happened along the way. After a month and at least 6 million gallons of light, sweet crude oil spilled (Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons), lots of warning, rhetoric and hand wringing. There have been no signs of a significant disaster. Yes, some marine life have died and a significant oil slick, like a brown ooze has now reached delicate coastal areas of Louisiana. But no sign of catastrophic devastation.
The Obama administration sent an armed SWAT team from the Interior Department in the first few hours of the accident. Perhaps to arrest the oil rig. The Coast Guard has been the primary Federal Agency on scene but woefully ill equipped for a spill of this size. Meanwhile, Washington has seen fit to close down fishing areas of the gulf not yet affected by the oil. I've been saying for two weeks now that the Obama Administration, it's weak effort and an irresponsible media, hell bent on presenting devastation where none exists. Will be more costly to fishing and tourism than the oil itself.
On Tuesday, the lame stream media got their wish. TAR BALLS FOUND IN FLORIDA KEYS!!!! This is what the Greenie, environmentalist, tree hugging, bark and pine cone eating, wackadoo's were hoping for. This will put a stop to all this oil drilling! And "Drill Baby Drill" will be a thing of the past.
My friends, I've been going to the beaches of Florida for forty plus years. You know what? Tar balls happen! I remember being about the age of 5 or 7 and having tar on my feet, hands and legs. My mom using nail polish remover to take it off. From St. Augustine to Big Pine Key, I've experienced tar in the ocean and on the beach.
So, the Coast Guard tested the pesky balls of tar found on the beach in The Keys. You know, it wasn't from the spill. A loud "DAMN IT" could be heard in the halls of Green Peace. Now there is no doubt that there will be some environmental damage because of this accident. But the Chicken Little mentality of the left and their allies in the media will not help.
Because of the irresponsible reporting of the media throughout the country, tourists are canceling their plans of coming to Florida. We are two weeks away from Memorial Day weekend. A time when folks from every where come to all areas of our fine state to relax and blow off some steam. I don't know where they will go now but this is going to be a huge hurt to restaurants, hotels, resorts, charter boat fishing captains and to fisherman. Who's going to want to buy Gulf fish and shrimp if the folks think its tainted with oil?
The only oil spilled on the beaches of this state has been sun tan oil. The media, just like when a hurricane is approaching, stand in front of large maps showing the slick. They show where it is and then they start to show where it may go. Always pushing it towards land. My land. My beautiful State of Florida. The say things like, "Once the slick reaches the loop current, it will only be a matter of days before oil is washing ashore on the beaches of Florida and headed up the east coast". Really? First of all, what the fuck is this new phrase the media is now in love with? The Loop Current! Who the hell has ever heard of it? I've lived here all of my life. I've never once heard it 'til now. I was always taught in school and come to learn what it has been known as forever. THE GULF STREAM!
These left wing, liberal, green pushing, ass clowns make up new terms and phrases. What ever can push their agenda along on an unsuspecting public. This disaster is a god send for them but it's just not working out. We don't have oil soaked birds and waves of black rolling onto pristine beaches and they are frustrated. This accident has everything they need in one story to come out against some of the biggest issues and organizations they hate. Capitalism, big oil companies, off shore drilling (on shore drilling for that matter), politicians and people who are in favor of off shore drilling. People like Bucky Butler and Sarah Palin.
If they could only get the disaster they want. But mother nature, who caused all this to begin with, with a big belch of Methane gas, isn't cooperating. The oil isn't rising to the surface. And what does is being diluted by the shear volume of sea water and actually evaporating. Chemical dispersant's have helped but some have cautioned about their over use. Most of the oil is below the surface. Being broken up by the Gulf waters or just settling to the bottom. People, lets remember, oil is not man made. It comes from the earth.
This was an accident. Who or what is at fault is up to an investigation. Just like plane crashes, mine collapses, train derailments or a fender bender, it was an accident subject to an investigation. They will get to the bottom of it. It will make the industry better and safer. But MORE regulation is never the answer. Capital Hill calling for hearings, Barry instructing a half dozen bureaucratic agencies to come up with more regulations. Demonizing the companies involved and the oil industry will not solve the problem.
Meanwhile, please come to Florida. The beaches are clean and open. The hotels are cool and comfortable and we have the best seafood and the finest restaurants in the world. But don't forget the sun tan oil.
